How to Drain a Hot Tub

A hot tub is a wonderful thing to have on your patio or in a garden, but it will need maintenance from time to time. This includes occasions when you will need to drain your hot tub. When should you drain it? Your hot tub will, of course, be kept clean by a bromine or chlorine system, using the best chemicals for your hot tub.

Although it’s important to keep your hot tub clean, and you can use all kinds of hot tub vacuums to help you do this, it’s a major factor to keep the water clean too.

To keep the water clean and the system operating correctly, the water should still be changed every few months. If you use one of the salt-water systems, it will only need changing every year. So, how do you drain a hot tub? Let’s have a look.

Draining Using the Spigot

Knowing how to clean your hot tub is something you should look into before you make the purchase. Here’s a guide on how to drain your hot tub using the spigot.

When you installed your hot tub, you will have followed the advice and placed it near to a drain. It’s now that this advice makes its importance clear!

You’ll need to have to hand a stretch of standard garden hose, long enough to reach from the hot tub to the drain. Next, you need to make sure that all the power is off, as having the pumps running when the tub is empty can damage the system.

How to Properly Drain a Hot Tub

Once you are sure there’s no power switched on, you should locate the spigot on your hot tub. Attach the hose in the manner illustrated in the manufacturer’s instruction booklet.

Be careful with this bit as the spigot may well have a plastic thread that can be easily mis-threaded. Once you’re all connected, you’re ready to go – open the spigot valve, and the water will begin to drain.

It should take an hour or so to drain an average-sized hot tub, and once you have it empty you can give the shell inside a good clean, check all filters are clean, and you’re ready to fill it up again!

Draining Using an Internal Pump

Many hot tub owners also invest in a submersible pump, one that can quickly pump out the water in the spa and save a lot of time! In fact, for your average hot tub, this method will take no more than 15 minutes to clear the water.

It’s very simple: you disconnect the hot tub from the power – as before, you need to make sure this is done correctly – and attach the pump to a stretch of hose long enough to reach the drain.

Everything You Need to Know about How to Drain a Hot Tub

Insert the pump into the water, turn it on, and let it do the job! It is the most efficient way of saving time when emptying your hot tub and means you can start filling again once you’ve cleaned the shell to your satisfaction.

Emptying and cleaning your hot tub is a job that should be done before you start to use it for the season, and you will find it helps prolong the life of your spa.

With a freshly cleaned hot tun waiting for use, and new freshwater also, you and your family and friends will be able to continue enjoying what is one of the most pleasurable of all garden fitments for as long as you wish.
